Crematogaster is a native North American Ant, ranging from a dark brown in color to jet-black. They form large colonies & often form long roads when they find a large amount of attractive sweet food
or when they're moving their nest. Typical of the genus Crematogaster is the raised sections of the abdomen during a disturbance. At the tip they secrete defensive secretions known as formic acid which is very effective against both predators and prey. Large colonies are very dominant and aggressive. These ants require a hibernation period during the winter. A great beginner species. These ants have heart-shaped abdomens which they lift over their head when threatened. The name "Acrobat ant" derives from this. These ants are fast-growing, love small pieces of various fruits and are escape artists. Good escape prevention is encouraged (no tiny holes where they can squeeze out of).
