A tiny, cryptic species that lives and forages almost entirely underground, Ponera pennsylvanica is not a queen that most people consider to be a "cool" ant species. I beg to differ completely, as watching these ants hunt is an incredible spectacle. These ants will readily hunt and catch springtails, termites and other small soft-bodied arthropods in the soil and will sting them. These queens require a damp soil habitat with springtails readily available.
Queens are normally around 2-3mm while workers range from 1.7-2.5mm. The queens will actively hunt and sting the prey which they consume back in the nest. These queens can communally found and is recommended. They subsist entirely on protein and will almost always ignore any sucrose. Keeping this ant is not an easy task and is not recommended for beginners!
These ants are excellent in Bioactive Vivariums. They are natural predators and will maintain a balance of other micro-organisms.
