Although they're nicknamed fire ants, they aren't part of the true Fire Ant (Solenopsis) genus. These ants came to North America in the early times of the intercontinental trade routes via explorers' ships. A particularly aggressive species once colonies grow into larger numbers.
 
These ants aren’t picky with their food. It’s important to keep the enclosure moist as these ants do not do well in dry conditions. These ants can have more than one queen in some cases. Queens are normally around 4-6mm while workers range from 3-4mm. Queens of this species are semi-claustral, which means that they do forage for food while raising their incipient brood.
